demo + 2 (2001 - Greensboro, NC)

by The Dirty Version

1.
Better the devil you know Than the devil you don’t Not flapping like finches in bushes Or trampling on in a parade We can’t hide ourselves behind lines Better they cover their faces Than those who hide without masks Bedsheets are chanting on court steps Real devils are peaking out
2.
O Carolina Don’t close your door on me I’ve got two arms to work I’ve got two eyes to see The ghost of the workers all Shouting “Immigrants, now swim home” Their bosses don’t hear them By their pools on their cell phones Paramount is home When the work of the summer’s gone When the work of the summer’s gone Paramount is home O Carolina Don’t turn your back on me I’ve got two mouths to feed They’ve got a right to eat O frontier justice Born like Venus from the foam of the sea An injustice to you Must be an injustice to me Paramount is home When the work of the summer’s gone When the work of the summer’s gone Paramount is home When I look up into the air And notice all the black clouds there I believe what I’ve always believed And nothing will change what I’ve seen You shook me all night long

Poor speaker, so rattled by verse Poor narrator, no time to rehearse I give him latitude for his responsibilities But every shifting mood has such a consequence for me I can’t keep waiting and waiting For depth of conversation I feel I have to move To find my own direction Poor architect, your building shaken to the ground Poor manager, you’re desperate now I can’t understand why I keep working to please them Why do I say these words, “You can count on me?” I can’t keep waiting and waiting For depth of conversation I feel I have to move To find my own direction
4.
Go West my son! Take the keys and whatever you ask for Don’t look back, though The East is a mess of shuddering pieces Californian cliffs Long cold paths on black sand beaches Don’t work too hard What good is a coast if you never can reach it? Wheels and minds aflame Searching for better things Remember you’re settling down And the sun sets at home At last The hills are shaking Oranges The grass is yellow Tied to me Are ribbons I could never leave I’m wondering What good is a home if you never can leave it? Wheels and minds aflame Searching for better things Remember you’re settling down And the sun sets at home

No, we can't keep our wings lifted It's not the morning that makes us sing Colorations not a sign of the gifted Broken holders of the morals we bring No, we can't keep our hands lifted Or the timbres of our voices clean Swooping in but for the threat of the window Another victim for the agency Birds in colors like a calendar's numbers Hear it coming like the spreading of a wing Orioles and bluebirds and jays Baltimore, Toronto had their way Forged in life, there are conditions to the names we take Orioles, they aren't just properties and they are just things Cardinals, on baseball bats and diamond rings No, we can't keep our wings lifted for stockholders or prosperity Looking out from a caroller's bumper Feet are frozen to the lake until spring Fear of flying becomes a fear of a flash flood Fear of dying from a rifle's sting Birds in colors like a calendar's numbers Fascinated by the image of these teams Orioles and bluebirds and jays Baltimore, Toronto had their way Forged in life, there are conditions to the names we take Orioles, they aren't just properties and they aren't just things Cardinals, on baseball bats and on diamond rings
